Carved off from the largest Wildlife Game Reserve in Africa, the Selous Game Reserve, the Nyerere National Park was officially gazetted as a National Park in 2019. It is spread over 30,893 square kilometers of land area, making it the largest National Park in Africa. The Park is located in South Eastern Tanzania. Prior to creating Nyerere National Park, Selous Game Reserve measured approximately 54,600 square kilometers.
The National Park can be accessed by road, from Dar Es Salaam the trip takes around 5-6 hours but by flight where it can take roughly 45 minutes from Dar Es Salaam and the aircrafts land at a variety of airstrips spread around the park. There are also direct flights from Zanzibar to Nyerere National Park though some connections may be non direct with brief stop in Dar Es Salaam.
The park is home to a large number of birds and mammals. Tourist visiting this park have a good chance to spot Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Elephant, Rhino and other plains game such as Giraffe and Zebra. For the bird Watchers there are more than 430 recorded bird species in the park combined with the Selous Game Reserve. Some of the birds one can spot include the Giant Kingfisher, Pink-backed Pelicans, White-fronted Bee-eater and African Skimmers. Also, the might Rufiji River is another attraction in the park as some of the area touched the park classified as photographic zones and are major attractions as they give tourists chances to spot Hippo and other animals in this special picture square landscape.
